What The Hippies Don’t Tell You about Tibet
“More extraordinary, the PLA accomplished its mission in Tibet peacefully and without issue. A treaty was signed between the Tibetan elite and the PRC and they got along well for 5 years. That changed in 1956, however, whent the Communists, began implementing land redistribution. It should be noted that redistribution was not exclusive to Tibet but something that happened generally across all of China’s territory. This is the clear origin of the modern Sino-Tibetan conflict. The Tibetan rebellion was led by its elite with strong support from the American CIA (eager for some payback following America’s humiliation by China during the Korean War). What really kills me is nobody points this out. The original issue behind Tibet was not suppression of civil rights or a “genocide of culture” but the gentry and religous authorities’ opposition to land reform. The hippie slogan “Free Tibet” is completely facetious, the rebellion not having been about freedom, indepence, or human dignitiy, but about people losing power and trying to regain it.”
